Day hospice services gradually open up again

After a full year of supporting day patients with phone and Zoom calls, staff at Willow Wood have welcomed patients and their carers back to the the Ashton-based hospice again.

In addition, day hospice staff are now able to visit, assess and, where appropriate, support patients in their homes.

Rebecca Stimson, head of day services said: “We’re starting off slowly by inviting small numbers to different groups, but it’s already making a difference to their lives.

“After shielding for a year people are finding it an absolute joy to return and of course, carers are benefiting as much as our patients.”

Carer Betty Topham agreed: “I used to take part in the arts and crafts group and loved it.

“Now, I’ve joined the START Activities Group and it felt so good to join Rebecca for a walk in the park, knowing that my husband Jack was being well looked after back at Willow Wood.

“We’re doing some gardening as well. I’ve planted sunflowers at home and this week we spent some time planting up pots for the hospice garden before a cuppa and a chat.”

Further groups are continuing including the popular men’s and women’s group and a Reiki empowerment group, some on Zoom.

During the pandemic there has been  time to reassess and restructure services to provide the best possible treatment packages for patients.

Rebecca said: “Our aim is to rehabilitate our patients to be able to live their best possible lives and to support them with our holistic care.

“Another aim is to link in with Live Active Tameside with taster exercise sessions and working with the McMillan Unit to ensure we offer integrated care.”

If you feel that you, or a relative, could benefit from Willow Wood’s care, ring 0161 330 1100 and ask for Day Services, or go to https://www.willowwood.info to find out more.
