The Tameside Radio presenter previews his interview with Robert Lloyd, frontman and founding member of post-punk/alternative rock band The Nightingales which you can listen to on Monday's show.

Forming in Birmingham in 1979, post punk and alternative rock band The Nightingales quickly became one of the most loved cult bands of the ‘80s.

Front man Robert Lloyd led the band through several line-ups, with fans of the band never quite knowing what to expect next. 

Lloyd was always willing to listen to his fellow musicians’ input and ideas, creating some amazing music along the way.

Despite the band having a long break between the late ‘80s and 2004, The Nightingales have still produced 11 quality albums, the most recent being 2020’s ‘Four Against Fate’, one of my personal favourites of theirs. 

Legendary DJ John Peel championed the band from day one, supporting them as much as he could along the way, and many famous faces, most notably comedian, actor, and broadcaster Phil Jupitus, are known to be huge fans of the band.

A tour was planned for 2021, which sold out quickly. This was postponed due to the pandemic and lockdown, and will now take place over April and May this year, when the band hit the road for a huge 15 date tour. 

In 2020, Robert Lloyd was the subject of a long-awaited documentary ‘King Rocker’, which was released recently, along with a soundtrack of the film’s music to accompany it.

I’ve not seen it yet, but am really looking forward to doing so, as The Nightingales are one of the most intriguing, and experimental bands of a generation. 

Another new album is planned for later on in the year, and the forthcoming tour brings The Nightingales to Manchester’s Deaf Institute on Saturday, April 23. Tickets are limited and it’s advisable to buy in advance.
