Close call in Dukinfield-Stalybridge after recounts drama

Concerned faces across all parties at the count as a number of results proved far too close for comfort - not least in Dukinfield/Stalybridge which was the closest of all.

Depending on your political persuasion the number 13 was either a very lucky - or very unlucky number in Dukinfield/Stalybridge.

For that was the total of votes by which Labour narrowly clung onto the seat as the Conservatives came within a hair’s breadth of claiming a second high profile scalp on election day in Tameside.

It took three recounts before the Conservatives conceded and Labour councillor Leanne Feeley was declared the winner, retaining her seat.

Leanne Feeley remains in her position.

It was all a far cry from her election in 2016 when she had taken a near 57 per cent share of the vote to cruise to victory - and back then the Tories did not even field a candidate.

Independents - and especially Stalybridge Town had made headway in the ward - especially in the 2019 election.

But with no independents standing in the area this time it turned into a straight fight between Labour and Conservative - and a fascinating battle which delayed the completion of the Tameside election count into the early evening.

Kurt Mcpartland had fought a hard-working campaign and thanked his team - especially Stalybridge South ward councillor Liam Billington, declaring: “Honestly buzzing with this result - only lost by 13 votes! Yes I lost but I closed the gap massively and for my first campaign I think it’s a brilliant result.”

Close call for Kurt who thanks his team.

He stated: “I just want to thank everyone who went out to vote. It’s a great first start and I hope to continue the good work we’ve made.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this experience and being given the chance to represent you.”

The only other candidate standing in the ward was Dawn Anthony for the Greens, who finished a distant third.
