Civic Mayor's Ball celebrates charities and community groups

It has been a challenging two years for the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Janet Cooper, and her Consort Mr Dennis Fitzpatrick.

Assuming the Mayoral chains virtually during Covid in May 2020, it was a year beset with lockdowns and restrictions that barely afforded any opportunities for the Mayor to be out in the community.

But the term was extended into the 2021-2022 year and at least in the past months the Mayor has seized on supporting as many events and local good causes as possible as restrictions eased.

So the Mayor’s Charity Ball, staged on Saturday at Dukinfield Town Hall, signals the end of an incredible period and a celebration of our local charities and community groups supported through the Mayor’s Charity Appeal.

These include Cascade Baby Bundles, Friends Of Tameside Young Carers, Tameside 4 Good and Tameside Scanner Appeal.

Attendees at the event included local MPs Angela Rayner, Jonathan Reynolds and Andrew Gwynne alongside many of our local councillors. The Greater Manchester Mayors also attended and showed their support along with Sharman Birtles MBE JP DL, Vice Lord-Lieutenant.

Other distinguished guests featured Executive Leader of Tameside Council, Councillor Brenda Warrington, Steve Barton BEM, Derrick Evans and Massimino Malacrino who was also taking snaps and video for About Tameside.

The flowers for the ball adorning the hall were arranged especially at the Mayor’s request by Tameside College floristry students.

This new course is a part time course, ideal for creative adults who are interested in a career change to floristry, coving a range of floristry skills that are essential to the floristry industry.
