Canal Boat Trust wins community vote and funds

WELCOME BOOST: Mark receives the cheque from Colette.

Tameside Canal Boat Trust (TCBT) are celebrating after being awarded a donation by their local Asda store.

The charity has been given a cheque for £500 after receiving the most number of votes as part of the Ashton store’s ‘Green Token’ scheme.

As part of the process, three charities are selected, with the runners-up each being given £200 each, so no charity loses out.

Chair of TCBT, Mark Nield, gladly received the cheque at their Portland Basin base from Colette Regan, Community Champion at Asda Ashton.

Colette said: “I love going out and giving money to people. It’s the best part of my job!

“I’ve worked with Mark and Stuart for a while, I’ve been on party trips with them and helped out. I love coming here.”

Mark said that the money will allow them to continue their hard work and keep the boats on the water.

“The money will make a massive difference to us,” he said.

“It will enable us to continue to operate our community boat trips and especially our specialist boat trips for the well-being of disabled passengers in the area.”

They currently offer cruises of up to 45 minutes from Portland Basin along the local canals.

As part of an agreement with the Canal and River Trust, the group is now also responsible for the stretch of canal between Portland Basin and Whitelands Road in Ashton.

The group is always looking for new volunteers and anyone that would like to find out more is asked to get in touch via the group’s Facebook page.
