BGT winner to stage Comic Relief show in Mossley

ON STAGE: Jon Courtenay at the George Lawton Hall.

Mossley's very own Britain's Got Talent winner is staging a show for charity.

Jon Courtenay, who won BGT in 2020, is putting on a show at the George Lawton Hall in Mossley on Friday (18 March) in aid of Comic Relief.

Dad-of-two Jon shot to fame after he became Ant and Dec’s Golden Buzzer Act on BGT after singing an original comedy song in the opening round.

This meant he was automatically through to the live shows. He then wowed TV audiences with another of his comedy songs, winning enough votes for the final and eventually he was crowned the winner.

The musical comedian stormed to victory with 35.7 per cent of the public vote, after coming out on top in an all-North West top three - ahead of Manchester-based choir Sign Along With Us and Chorley comedian Steve Royle.

Jon, 49, who was born in Weymouth but now lives in Mossley, said he wanted to play in his home town.

He said: “We are doing a show this Friday and everyone has really stepped up.

“We are holding it at the George Lawton Hall, like a cabaret, with a bar and with big round tables so friends and family can sit together.

“I put some posts on social media and said if I did this would people be interested and enough people commented so we set it up.

“We spoke to the manager of the hall and he said ‘absolutely.’ We spoke to the local council and they said yes you can have it for free.

“We have already sold more than half of the tickets. I am looking forward to it, my local show.

“People were always asking when are you going to do the George Lawton Hall, because I did a UK theatre tour last year, and it was fantastic. But now I get to do my local venue and doing it for charity.”

The show starts at 7.30pm on Friday and tickets cost £15 for adults and £10 for children and OAPs. You can buy tickets at https://www.joncourtenay.com or on the door. You can also donate at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rednoseday22-jon-c?
