Bee-rilliant donation helps keep lifeline up and running

A grant from The Running Bee Foundation has enabled Being There Tameside, based in Dukinfield, to keep people connected during the pandemic.

The Running Bee Foundation provides grants from profits raised from all of its UK races to give to community initiatives across Manchester and the North West, all to help promote health and well-being and the fight to tackle and reduce childhood obesity.

The grant of £500 was awarded to Being There Tameside back before the first lockdown and was used to enable them to continue their befriending service and even set up an online social group to benefit those who might be struggling from isolation or loneliness.

The charity gives emotional support and practical assistance to people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses, with a view to promote well-being through befriending visits and social groups. They also cover Trafford, Salford and Manchester.

Suzanne Roberts, branch manager of Being There Tameside and Glossop, said: “Thanks to the cash grant from Running Bee Foundation, Being There Tameside has been able to deliver an invaluable telephone befriending service to more than 30 clients and a new online social group supporting up to 20 clients.

“The impact of this has been amazing with client feedback telling us they are feeling less isolated and lonely, feeling like they have a friend and feeling more positive despite challenging times.”

The team also organised a fun card making session just prior to lockdown, with group users trying out their creative skills and getting crafty!

“Christmas was made very special when Being There staff and volunteers were able to deliver surprise Christmas gift bags to clients... bringing a happy smile to those living alone,” Suzanne added.

“We also organised a Christmas themed ‘Name that Tune’ quiz for our online social group with everyone singing along and reminiscing about the past... great fun for everyone and a positive end to a tough year!

“Thank you to Running Bee Foundation for helping us to make the last 10 months so much more bearable and uplifting for our lovely clients.”
