A highly anticipated auction of hundreds of donated artworks has raised many hundreds of pounds for Stalybridge-based Cancer Warriors.

Some 200 works went under the hammer as the unique exhibition of works by artists whose lives have all in some way been touched by cancer came to a close at the town’s Astley Cheetham Gallery.

Cancer Warriors founder Derrick Evans had come up with the idea for the exhibition and played auctioneer at last Saturday’s event.

“The exhibition and auction have been a great success and I plan to organise another exhibition in the near future,” said Derrick.

Derrick thanked the artists for donating their works to the cause, museums manager Rachel Cornes and Dukinfield/Stalybridge councillor Leanne Feeley, without whom the initiative would not have come to fruition.

Some of the artists had only taken up their art during the Covid lockdown, with works including watercolours, bead work and photographs.

A sum of £780 had been raised by Wednesday (23 March) with some works still to sell - a fitting amount as the charity continues its sixth birthday anniversary this year.

The Cancer Warriors Information and Support Centre can be found at 71 Melbourne Street, Stalybridge.
