Assistant principal on the run for hospice

Paul Gladwell, assistant principal at Silver Springs Primary Academy in Stalybridge, is running hundreds of miles for a good cause.

Throughout this month, he’s aiming to run a total of 268 miles, the same length as the Pennine Way, to raise money for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.

Paul (pictured) said: “I chose Dr Kershaw’s Hospice because of the care they provide for people with life-limiting illnesses.

“They are due to move into a new building which has been delayed and incurred increased costs due to Covid-19.

“It costs £3.6 million a year to fund the hospice, so every little helps!”

The independent hospice is based in Oldham and relies heavily on fundraising activities and donations.

However, the pandemic has made it difficult for Dr Kershaw’s to hold their usual fundraising events, including its summer fair, Christmas concerts and their Colour Blast run.

Dr Kershaw’s Hospice serves a population of 235,000 people, offering helpline services and support for patients and carers.

Paul’s efforts have raised £545 so far, smashing his target of £100.

With less than 100 miles to complete, he’s been doing most of his running in the hills, on footpaths around Saddleworth.
