Ashton school comes together to celebrate Easter

Pupils at St Peter's CE Primary in Ashton marked a key period in the school year before breaking up for the Easter holidays.

Chris Colvin, deputy head teacher at St Peter's, said: "Easter is an important time in our St. Peter’s calendar and an occasion we always ensure to mark and this year it was lovely to be able to come together."

On Tuesday, youngsters at the Oxford Street school enjoyed an Easter raffle to raise funds for the Disasters Emergency Committee and the Friends of St. Peter’s. The school want to say a big thank you to all of the local businesses who donated.

Classes also visited St. Peter’s Church to take part in Experience Easter. Sessions were led by the school's Foundation Governors, local parishioners and Year 5 pupils. At each station, pupils reflected on Jesus and the events of Palm Sunday, through him washing the disciples’ feet, and breaking bread together at the Last Supper, being alone in the Garden of Gethsemane on Maundy Thursday, and leading up to the Cross on Good Friday and the story of the Resurrection on Easter Day.

On Thursday, the whole school came together in church for the first time since December 2019. Each class performed with music teacher Mr Derbyshire and members of the Ethos Council and Trinity shared readings. The school's two National Younger Leaders closed the service in prayer.

Chris added: "Our Ethos Council shared all of the amazing work that classes have been doing during Lent. Lent is a season of reflection, before the celebrations of Easter. At St. Peter's we try and give back during this season.

"This year, each class participated in their own Eco Lenten Challenge with pupils litter picking, making bird feeders and some classes even adopting their own endangered species."

The school ended a fun-filled week with an Easter Bonnet Parade. The Friends of St Peter's sourced eggs which were awarded for the best bonnets and best dancing.
