Ashton primary school marks Royal British Legion's 100th anniversary

A primary school in Ashton has been marking the 100th anniversary of the Royal British Legion in a special way.

Pupils at St Peter's CE Primary School took part in a special Collective Worship over Zoom - attended by Deborah Smith (Manchester Diocese Director of Education) Karen Beal (Manchester Diocese Children's Officer) Joe Larrigan (Chair of the Greater Manchester Royal British Legion) and also residents from Broughton Nursing Home, a veterans care village in Salford.

Chris Colvin, deputy head teacher at the Oxford Street school, said: "As a school, we have close connections to the RBL and Broughton House, having visited for Valentines and Christmas musical performances, and our pupils really wanted to do something special to mark this special birthday.

"During the worship, Trinity Club led special prayers and shared lots of information all about the amazing work that the RBL do to support the Armed Forces community.

"Reception also sang a special rendition of Happy Birthday and our Year Six pupils and Mr Derbyshire performed a selection of songs by Vera Lynn and also 'Look for the Silver Lining' by Jerome Kern."

Across the school, pupils have also devised prayer spaces linked to St Peters' Mustard Vision and the Royal British Legion's 100th anniversary.

Meanwhile, last weekend, the Ashton-under-Lyne branch of the RBL marked the anniversary at the town's war memorial.

Sadly, plans for a huge parade in London could not go ahead due to the pandemic.
