Alex B Cann at the movies: Five films for you to enjoy

The Tameside Radio presenter and movie fanatic has been to see five very different films which he ranks from his least favourite to the top choice.

Since last week's column, I've seen five films at the cinema, which I'll run through in order of preference.

In fifth place is The Invitation. This wasn't a ghoulishly bad film as such, but it did tick a lot of horror 'jump scare' cliche and character boxes. A broke waitress in New York decides to look up her family history, and she ends up being invited to a wedding in Whitby, North Yorkshire, by a long lost cousin she never knew she had. I'm not sure I would have rushed to attend, but of course our central character Evie willingly accepts, being broke and alone in the Big Apple.

There are hints of Get Out in the plot, as she arrives to discover her new family is more than a little strange, and I sensed a really good film buried under the creaky four poster beds & bodice-ripping action. Predictable, ludicrous, and it takes a long time to crank into life...not one to sink your fangs into in a hurry really.

In fourth place, I'll go for Fall. Two best friends decide to climb a 2000 foot abandoned radio tower in the middle of the desert, and they end up stranded at the top, as the escape ladder crumbles into dust below. It was an edge-of-seat film that definitely kept my attention, really well shot, and as long as you suspend your disbelief a little, an enjoyable rollercoaster ride. Not one to watch if you're scared of heights, though. And the bit with the vultures stayed with me afterwards!

In third position, Beast starring Idris Elba as Dr Nate Daniels, fighting off an angry lion definding its territory following a brutal attack by poachers. It's a fairly simple premise...survival of the fittest in the wilds of South Africa, and the camera work is beautifully done. The movie doesn't try to overcomplicate things, and Iyana Halley & Leah Jeffries are excellent as Dr Daniels' daughters.

Runner up is The Forgiven. Ralph Fiennes has rarely been on better form, with Jessica Chastain simmering on screen as his wife. Drama unfolds as a couple speeding to a lavish party in the Moroccan desert hit and kill a teenage fossil seller, and try to cover up their crime. The boy's dad has other ideas, as he turns up at their complex seeking the driver and some consequences. The ugliness of wealth, cultural ignorance and grotesque characters are all on display, making this a must watch.

My gold medal simply has to go to E.T., which is back and on IMAX for its 40th anniversary. Thursday (8 September) is the last night to catch it, and what a treat, as we see six year old Drew Barrymore ("I don't like his feet"), that famous flying bike scene, and all the stuff that made this the highest grossing film of all time for over a decade after its release. I loved it when I was five, and I still love it now at forty five. Hopefully it will get another re-release in 2062!
