Aldi to give staff at its Tameside supermarkets a pay rise

Aldi has announced that it will be increasing pay for staff in its supermarkets in Greater Manchester in the New Year.

The UK's fifth-largest supermarket will pay all Store Assistants at least £10.10 from 1 February 2022, which the chain says maintains its position as the country's best-paying supermarket.

Aldi says it is also the only supermarket to offer paid breaks, which for the average store staff member is worth £750 annually.

The new pay rates exceed the Living Wage Foundation’s recommended real living wage rates of £9.90 an hour nationally, a spokesperson for the supermarket said.

Giles Hurley, Chief Executive Officer for Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “The commitment and enthusiasm of our colleagues has driven our success over many years, particularly during the last 18 months.

“We want to ensure our colleagues are always fully rewarded for their amazing work. These new rates, together with the fact that we are the only supermarket to pay colleagues for breaks taken during their shifts, means we continue to offer the best pay in the supermarket sector.”

There are four Aldi stores in Tameside - on Wellington Road in Ashton, Great Norbury Street in Hyde, Leech Street in Stalybridge and Crownpoint North Retail Park in Denton.

Aldi now has more than 950 stores throughout the UK.
