"A dream come true": Ashton under-10s dance team crowned British Champions

After putting their best foot forward at the British Open Championships in Blackpool Winter Gardens, an Ashton-based team of under-10s have earned the title of British Champions.

This marks the first time in 17 years that a English team has won this prestigious competition, due to the unrivalled skill of the Welsh teams at previous events.

The 16-strong group from Latin Steps Dance Company were up against talent from all over the country and for some this was their first major competition, with the youngest competitor being only eight years old.

"As a school, we have worked towards this goal for ten years and this weekend our dreams came true," owner Aimee Bailey said.

Prior to competing in the Latin Formation section, the team had stayed in Blackpool overnight before a 3am wakeup to begin hair and makeup and then the competition itself ran from 10am until 6pm.

Competing alongside ten other teams, the theme last weekend was "carnival". The dancers rehearse three or four times per week, including bank holidays in the run up to competitions, and have been preparing their recent piece since May 2023.

One performer, Dollie, said: "I am so proud of Carnival team. I love my dance friends so much. Thank you to our amazing dance teachers Aimee and Sara for making it possible and our amazing dress maker Debs. This was the best day of my life."

Sara herself used to dance at the school and now supports Aimee with choreography and teaching.

Each dress is handmade by Aimee's mum, Debbie, who recently took up dress-making full-time. "We all love Debs," said one of many pleased parents.

The next step for the team will be another competition in Stoke-on-Trent on May 11.

Latin Steps offers Latin and Ballroom classes for all ages and abilities, and is a member of UKA, IDTA and UKFA. More information can be found on the Instagram page @latinstepsdancecompany.

Aimee won the event 20 years ago and now her son (pictured above) has won it too.
