Weekend Review: Greater Manchester Cricket League

Other than a handful of games in Division 4E the season reaches its conclusion this Saturday with a number of promotion and relegation issues to be decided.

Locally Flowery Field and Hadfield will secure promotion with a win whilst Droylsden are still in the hunt.  At the wrong end of the tables, Dukinfield know that a win will keep them up, whilst Denton need a victory but will be reliant on results elsewhere.

Premier:

Prestwich retained the Premier title as an abandoned game at Edgworth gave them the point needed for the silverware.

Denton SL are having a good end to the season and a comprehensive win over relegated Astley pushed them into fourth place. Batting first Liam Parkinson, with his second century of the season, laid the foundations for an impressive 266-69.  He finished with 110 and was backed up by Scott Kirwin and pro Damitha Silva. The visitors fell to 63-5 as Kirwin, (5-30), ran through the top order and despite some late resistance were never in the hunt finishing well adrift on 183ao.

Denton West will welcome the end of the season after an 11th defeat in 14 games, this time at Roe Green, left them in eighth place.  After winning their first seven games West have fallen away starkly. Hosts Roe Green reached 105-1 but West fought back well, taking the remaining nine wickets for 55, (Siraj Khan 4-42 & Luke Melling 4-25). In the reply West got to 112-4, (Callum Flynn top scoring with 39), and were favourites but then fell away as six wickets fell for 35, leaving them 13 adrift.

Denton SL 266-6 Astley & Tyldesley 183ao; Edgworth A-A Prestwich; Egerton 168ao Heyside 184ao; Walshaw 86-1 Clifton 85ao; Woodbank 199-9 Moorside 115ao; Roe Green 160ao Denton West 147ao

Premier 2:

Flowery Field are all but promoted after a narrow win at home to Bradshaw and will secure Premier cricket next year with a win this Saturday at champions Heaton or by Heywood failing to secure a bonus point win. Bradshaw totalled 176-9 and when Flowery stood at 89-6 it looked as though their promotion hopes would go into the final week. A seventh wicket partnership of 63 between Josh Dickin and Keegan Taylor took them within sight of the winning post but it still needed the last pair to get them over the line.

Glossop travelled to Bury and went down by 106 runs giving the home team a win which keeps alive their hopes of beating the drop.  With one game to go Flixton, Bury, Greenfield and Glodwick are all still in danger of relegation and only one of those will beat the drop.

Brooksbottom 98ao Shaw 99-0; Flixton 181-8 Glodwick 220-9; Heywood 167-8 Stand 163ao; Bury 198-9 Glossop 92ao; Greenfield 102-3 Heaton 101ao; Flowery Field 178-9 Bradshaw 176-9

Championship:

Dukinfield gave themselves a huge boost in their battle to avoid relegation with a 119-run win at relegated Westleigh.  Things looked gloomy when, batting first, they quickly fell tom 20-3.  Pro Denuwan Dadellage stepped up and his 154 got them up to an imposing 295ao. Dadellage made it a quite outstanding all-round display when he opened the attack in the Dukinfield reply.  He took 5-59 as Westleigh fell for 176ao, and with it a priceless bonus point win for the Higher King Street team.  They now know that a win against Winton this Saturday or defeat for Whalley Range will keep them in the Championship in 2023.

Mottram secured that status with a resounding win over Stretford.   Five wicket hauls for both Oliver Andrew, (5-35), and Ryan Fitton, (5-29), saw the visitors routed for 102ao.  It was no problem for Mottram as Andrew, (unbeaten on 40 to make it an impressive all-round day), saw them home by eight wickets.

At the top Monton secured a return to Premier 2 and it is looking as though Friarmere and Elton will join them, although Royton will be hoping for a slip up.

Westleigh 176ao Dukinfield 295ao; Mottram 104-2 Stretford 102ao; Woodhouses 279-4 Swinton Moorside 125ao; Royton 102-8 Elton 101ao; Whalley Range 155ao Monton 157-2; Winton 228-4 Friarmere 232-5

Division 1:

Hadfield, with a sixth win in succession, have propelled themselves into the promotion race and know that a win in an admittedly tough game at already promoted Saddleworth on Saturday will see them rise to the Championship. They set about the game against relegated Roe Green with a purpose racking up 318-9 as Liam Doyle, (46), and Tom Wyche, (67*) led the way.  A profligate visitors attack conceded 59 extras to help the cause. The reply was simply no contest as Doyle with two early wickets and Cameron Ball, (4-27), ensured six points for Hadfield.

Droylsden together with Hadfield have an interest in the race to join Saddleworth and Edenfield in the Championship after a win over Stayley.  Droylsden totalled 199ao after 40’s from Matt Halliday and Hashan Gunathila plus 52 from Lewis Jarvis. Amir Shahzad got 5-60 for Stayley. It was too many for Stayley who fell for 87ao, with Jarvis adding to his runs with 5-33 – a great all-round performance.

24 hours later Stayley secured Division 1 status with a 47-run home win over SW Manchester in a low scoring affair which leaves the visitors in a straight fight with Uppermill to avoid the last relegation place, (Roe Green and Oldham having been doomed for some weeks). Stayley toiled to 118ao in an innings lasting 48 overs. Faisal Hussain, (4-23), wrecked the SWM top order as they fell to 16-5 and then Chris Tipper, (3-14), finished things off.

Division 2B:

The shoot out for the title on Sunday saw the balance tip in Milnrow’s favour as they comprehensively beat Werneth at Ladyhouse.  Milnrow know that a win against Glodwick or a Werneth loss at Greenfield will see them champions.

Locally a very narrow defeat for Micklehurst against Denton SL saw them fall into the bottom half and they now need a win against Oldham and a loss for Glodwick to ensure Division 2 cricket next year. DSL reached 149ao.  In the reply Mark Dilnutt starred with the ball for DSL.  Three weeks ago, he had a nine-wicket haul against Denton and almost equalled that taking 8-46. After Micklehurst reached 122-3, (Shamar Marshall 42 * Rizwan Hussain 50), he proved unstoppable as the last 7 wickets fell for 24, as DSL won by just three runs.

Denton still have faint hope of avoiding the drop into Division 4 but were hardly helped by an eight-wicket defeat to Milnrow. They got to 155ao largely due to a ninth wicket partnership of 87 between Jake Addison, (65), and Jack Stringer, (25).  The championship challengers raced home by eight wickets with 18 overs unused. Denton’s hopes of survival rest on beating Wythenshawe and hoping Oldham overcome Micklehurst.

Micklehurst 146ao Denton SL 2nd XI 149ao; Friarmere 2nd XI 172-5 Oldham 2nd XI 169-8; Glodwick 2nd XI 214-2 Littleborough Lakeside 213ao; Denton 155ao Milnrow 158-2; Werneth 256-7 Wythenshawe 104ao; Denton West 2nd XI 190-5 Greenfield 2nd XI 146ao; Sunday: Milnrow 296-9 Werneth 134ao

Division 3E:

Champions Ashton kept up their 100% record in a subdued display against Flowery Field. Another big total looked on the cards as Ashton reached 67 without loss in 15 overs, but they then subsided to 132ao, (three wickets each for James Bradbury and Joe Lyon). Tom Rayson and Ryan Heap took early wickets to put Ashton on the front foot in the reply and Josh Gee rounded things off with 4-16 as Ashton won by 55 runs.

Mottram had an impressive win at Ashton Ladysmith after being set 210 for victory.  For Ladysmith Mitesh Patel, (48), and Dave Gaskin, (60), laid the foundation as William Davis took 6-52 for the visitors.  Mottram were reduced to 99-5in reply but an outstanding knock from Sam Fazackerley, (81*), aided by James Collinson, (33*) saw them to the win as they added an unbeaten 114.

Glossop 2nd XI 98ao Woodhouses 2nd XI 104ao; Ashton 132ao Flowery Field 2nd XI 77ao; Springhead 185ao Royton 2nd XI 324ao; Ashton Ladysmith 209-7 Mottram 2nd XI 213--5; Heyside 2nd XI 146ao Heywood 2nd XI 147-7; Dukinfield 2nd XI 95ao Werneth 2nd XI 96-3
