Teeing Off For Charity Event

For the past 12 years Denton Golf Club have been great hosts for the Samaritans Annual Golf Day which has pulled in teams of four from across the region to enjoy the popular Gary Singh Texas Scramble competition.

The day was set up originally by former Denton GC president Gary Singh and more recently has been organised by another Denton stalwart Garry Bennell.

Over the years the event has raised thousands of pounds for the deserving charity and added £2,195 via the latest golf day.

Garry Bennell said: “I would like to thank all the generous people who made donations and would also like to thank the Denton Board in allowing the event to take place.

“The top teams were led by Neil Painter with 54.87, Joel King 55.75, Captain 55.86 and Andy Gregory 56.88.

“We were also given great support on the day by Lesley Birchall, the co-director of the Manchester and Salford Samaritans and Nasrin Fazal the deputy director who is responsible for publicity and fundraising.”

Lesley added: “The day was a huge success and our Samaritans branch are truly grateful for every penny raised by Denton Golf Club.

“We have plenty of people to thank but for me it was Garry and Gary who did such a great organising job.”

Denton ladies played for the Joe Askew Trophy and Wendy Pollit won with 74, closely followed by club legend Sandra Marston 75 and Lana Mulhearn 76.

The 9-hole Stableford winner was Phyllis Carnie with 17 two more than Norma McIlvanney.

The Denton Wednesday Bowl reached its final round won by Stephen Cook66 ahead of Nicholas Green 67 and Ian Lakin 69.

The overall winner with 207 was Nicholas Green from Ian Lakin 212 and Kevin Brearley 214.

The monthly medal at Denton had the divisions topped by Robert Ashelby after a cpo on 67 with Gary Boott and Shahnawaz Gaughar also after a cpo on 67 with John Bennett.

The Tuesday Stableford at Ashton had the three divisions led in by Paul Radcliffe after a cpo on 38 with Colin Quinlan, Neil Stableford and Luke Kelly, Sean Gregg 37 and Andrew Molloy after a cpo on 39 with Daniel Halkyard with the yellow tee winner being Jeff Carter 40.

 A Seniors 3,2,1 Stableford at Ashton had the hot trio of P Haq, S Kiy and I Stott winning a cpo on 83 from M Easthope, F Turner and M Lee.

The Sunday Stableford at Ashton had the three divisions topped by Craig McCannon 39, Simon Ashton 41 and Graham Lees 39.

Ashton ladies played for the Hibbert Bowl and the proud winner was Joanne Edwards with 42 from Jane Littlewood 39 and Amy McGee and Kay Patrick, both 38.

Brookdale ladies played a medal for the Elizabeth Cup and it was won by Bev Mercer with 68 just one shot clear of Julie Howarth, Kath Storey, Jill Nolan and Susan Clarke.

The 13th Pro’s Summer comp at Brookdale had division one won by Steven Bland with 40, two more than Alan Robson.

Stuart Naismith was a clear winner in division two with 42 from Doug Unsworth and James Kelly, both 39.

A midweek Stableford at Crompton and Royton had division one topped by Ryan O’Leary with 42 from Paul Hopkinson and junior Daniel Melling, both 38.

Dane Ogden led in division two with 38 and division three was led in by Darren Harrison 41.

President’s Day at Dukinfield saw Ben Hughes win a cpo on 71 in division one from Andrew Hughes and next day the mixed medal was won by D Burgess and B Harrop with 63.0, from W Taylor and H Woolliscroft 64.0.

Fairfield’s men played a Bogey for the Jubilee Putter and Lee Headen led in division one with +4 from Sam Lunt and Charlie Pownell, both +1.In division two David Tarr was on form with +5 taking him clear of Steven Ainscough and Robin Desmond, both +3.

Good scoring at Saddleworth in a Pro’s Stableford with Tom Potts and Dave Ashton both posting 43 to win their respective divisions.

The Vice Captains Prize, played over 36 holes, had Phil Ramsker in hot form in round one with 64 and  Simon Halliwell 68 topped round two two.

The best gross scores in each round came from Mark Abbott 72 and Stephen Pullen 69.

The overall winner was Roy Dobson after a cpo on 137 with Neil Bamford.

The Saddleworth Lady Captain’s first round was won by Angela Gerrard after a cpo on 69 with Denise Brown, one less than Dawn White.

It also needed a cpo on 18 to see Kath Lacey win the 9-hole Stableford from Eileen Waddington.

The Tuesday Roll Up at Stamford was won by Colin Kershaw with 41, two more than Richard Guerinm Chris Lees and Neil Angus.

A Wednesday Mixed Stableford at Stamford had Steven Bardsley on top with 42, one more than Andy Swift.

It’s getting tight at the top of the Oldham and District Rabbits League with the top two teams Brookdale and Stamford sharing a 4-4 deadlock which retains Brookdale’s narrow three point lead.

Houldsworth and Ashton played each other twice in the league and cup Ashton won the delayed cup match by 12-4 but Houldsworth bounced back in the league fixture to win 6-2 to drop Ashton to the foot of the table.

The other result saw Oldham beat Dukinfield 5-3 to lift themselves level on points with Ashton.

League placings: 1 Brookdale 32, 2 Stamford 29, 3 Dukinfield 25, 4 Houldsworth 20,  5= Oldham and Ashton 19.
