Stamford Star Chris Has Eyes On The Treble

The popular Oldham Rabbits League has enjoyed a great season of league and cup fixtures.

Stamford Golf Club have picked up the bulk of the honours with a great double in the league and cup.

They took the league title by ten points with a great final fixture win by 8-0 over Brookdale to secure the destiny of the trophy.

Then a week later they played in the Cup Final at Dukinfield against Houldsworth.

Stamford’s star man Chris Exton led the way to the double with a close win in the opening game followed by wins for Dave Mulvey, Dave Quinn, match-play expert Paul Laing to put them in touching distance of the title then defeat for Huw Collins gave Houldsworth a slim hope of revival.

Next up was Rabbits debutant Lee Walker who clinched victory winning 3/2.

Chris Deacon went down 2/1 but the day was completed by a win for Chris Akers for a convincing 12-4 win.

Chris Exton has been the top man for Stamford throughout the season winning the Rabbits Order of Merit and The Team Player of the Year Trophy and he could complete a new treble success by winning the President’s Bowl at Ashton.

The Wednesday Stableford at Denton saw Keith Bentham win a cpo on 42 from Keith Johnson.The Past Captain’s Shield saw I and S Rathbone win a Greensome Stableford after a cpo on 45 with T Hale and Alan Painter and C Grindle and Mike Griffin.

The John Booth medal at Denton was won by James Brooks with 67 and the subsidiary medal was won by Glyn Powell with 67, one less than James Done and Gary Finn.

A ladies Stableford at Denton was won by Linda Leung with 35, well clear of Lana Mulhearn 31 and Pat Southall 27.

There was a hot competition at Saddleworth as their men played for the ‘major’ Captain’s Prize over 36 holes.

Leading in with 66+69+135 was Paul Brammer from Lee Rowbotham 136 and Bryn Parfitt 137.

Day prizes went to Graham Bearpark 66 and Dean McKenna 65 and Adam Rowbotham was the best gross winner on both days with rounds of 68 and 65.

Saddleworth ladies also played their Captain’s ‘major’ first round and in a close finish Liz Hinchliffe led in with 72, one less than Denise Brown, Barbara Shuttleworth and Cheryl Eastwood with Janice Nicholson winning the 9-hole Stableford with 16.

A Pro’s Stableford at Saddleworth had the divisions topped by Warren Mundy 40 and Allan McGroaty with a scorching 48.

A Pro’s BB Stableford at Saddleworth was led in by Steven Wild and Denis Lamb 47, one more than Paul Rowbotham and Roy Dobson and Jon Barnes and Andy Royle.

Mixed results for Saddleworth’s Oldham and District League teams as they A team beat Ashton 6-2 but the B team went down 5-3 to Ashton.

New Mills ladies were in Stableford mode and Katherine Lindsay was a clear winner with 38 from Margaret Palmer and Joyce Bennett, both 35 and Alison Wright and Jenny Forshaw, both 34.

The 9-hole winner was Angela Atkinson 16, one more than Lynne Mulhearn.

There was some hot scoring by New Mills men on Captain’s Day led by Jack Marshall who won a cpo on 62 from John Coleman , one less than Dan Thomas.

Peter Bethell was in a league of his own in a Sunday Stableford as he posted 46, 12 more than Andrew Firth.

Ashton ladies played a medal which was a qualifier for the MDLGA Bunty Booth in 2023 and Anna Lomas led in division one with 73, one less than Lady Captain Carol Aikin.

Julie Wild cruised to victory in division two with 67 and she will represent the club and in division three Brenda Beddoes was first past the post with 80.

The Tuesday Stableford at Ashton had the divisions le in by Michael Blomeley after a cpo on 37 with Craig McKinnin, Mel Colgan 41 and Eamonn O’Donnell 43 with the Yellow Tee winner being David Bailey after a photo finish on 35 with Dave Winterbottom.

Ashton seniors played for the Herva Widdal Cup in a BB Stableford won by G Nelson and G Garside with 47, two clear of five pairs on 45 led by C Ventress and W Thomas.

It was close in the Friday Roll Up at Brookdalw with a cpo on32 being won by Stuart Naismith from Paul Wood and Anthony Curran.

Stuart kept up his hot form winning division one in the 18th Pro’s Summer Stableford posting 39 to win from Stephen Foy 38 and Joseph Allen 37.

In division two Barry Campbell won a cpo on 38 from Andrew Walsh, one more than Dave Turner.

Brookdale ladies played two rounds for the Brookdale Cup and Lesley Eaton led in round one with 67 from Victoria Akin 68 and Julie Evans 72.

Round two was won by Maureen Parker 69 from Jill Nolan 70 and Victoria Akin and Bev Mercer, both 71.

The Ladrose Stableford for Dukinfield ladies had a runaway leader in Tracey Blondon with a massive 49 from Helen Wooliscroft 41 and Julie Wilshaw 34.

A Summer League Stableford for Duki’s men was led in by Liam Craighill 41 from Joshua Bradbury 40 and Mark Harper 39.

Fairfield’s men played over two rounds for the ‘major’ Marchington Cup and some good scoring in round one was led in by Al Shields64, Guiseppe Cicchinillo 65 and Douglas Meek and Gary Ward, both 66.

In round two Paul Wilks was first past the post with 68 from Steven Ainscough, Anthony Gunning, Darren Wild and Mark Palmer, all 69.

A cpo for the trophy on 135 was won by Steven Ainscough from Mark Palmer, one less than Darren Wild.
