Duncan Does The Business In Division One

Glossop Golf Club’s fourth monthly medal saw Duncan Pike coming to the fore again in division one.

He led the way with a net score of 64, two shots ahead of Mick Hartshorne and Darren Shanahan, respectively, who each finished with a 66 and had to be separated by a card play-off.

However, the best scoring of the day came in division two when three players all finished on 63 and required further card play-offs to separate them. John Kuczaj took the honours, with Kevin Fletcher in second and Chris Mountfort third.

A stableford competition was won by Ricky Wood of division one with a score of 37 points which knocked Dean Mitchell into second spot after he too had posted a 37, both players being one point ahead of third placed Duncan Pike. But it was in division two that the best score of the day was posted when Alan Beddows recorded a total of 39 points, as did Dave Wyatt who lost out to a further card play-off in second, closely followed by Andrew Shepley’s score of 38 in third.

One of the club’s major honours, the Nuttall Cup, went to Tony Meheran of division two who produced a great medal score of 61, three shots ahead of second placed Dave Jones on 64 and a further shot ahead of Brian Morgan’s 65. Division one was won by the club’s captain, Steve Wilson, with a superb knock of 63, followed by Chris Singleton in second on 66 and Duncan Pike third on the same score.

The winner of the ladies’ Nellie Williams Trophy was Joan Hanson who led the way with a 73, one ahead of Dee Kuczaj in second, with Rebecca Hodgkins’ 75 taking third.

Joan narrowly missed out on the Tweedale Rose Bowl when she came second with a medal score of 77 but the winner, Elsie Johnson, comfortably held her off after finishing on 73. Cath Stewart completed the top three placings with a total of 78.

The Mr. President’s nine holes’ stableford competition was won by Annette Hudson as she produced a fine total of 20 points, edging out June Sidebottom’s score of 19, with Janet Hargreaves trailing in their wake in third on 16 points.

Two further nine holes’ stableford competitions were held by the ladies section and Annette Hudson took the first with a score of 19 points, three clear of second placed Michelle Maunders on 16. Jane Wray won the second competition with her knock of 20 points, five clear of her nearest rival, Clare Culley.

Finally, the men’s section held a bogey competition, the Glossop and District Cup, which was won by division one’s Ryan Marsden as he came in with a score of 4 up, followed by Robert Barnes on three and Michael Townend on one. Dave Woodward took the honours in division two with a score of 3 up, well clear of Brian Morgan in second who finished level and third placed Allan Bradbury who ended the day one down.
