Celtic supporter Shaun raises a glass to new venture

Stalybridge Celtic supporter Shaun Bishop is set to fulfill a long time ambition after announcing plans to open his own business in the heart of the town.

Following the success of his pop-up bar inside Bower Fold for a temporary period last season, Shaun and his wife Ella have decided to expand their wings and launch their own store, Ol’s Bier, which will hopefully become the toast of the town.

Named after their son Oliver, the store, which is located at 93 Market Street, will be open to the public five days a week, from Tuesday until Saturday, selling local, national and international craft beers, world wines and artisan spirits.

In the final stages of its renovation, it’s hoped that the store will officially open in the next week.

Speaking to Reporter Sport ahead of the opening, Shaun said he can’t wait to unveil the store to the people of Stalybridge.

“It has been a long time ambition for us both to open a business in the town. With everything that has gone on over the past 12 months we thought if we don’t do it now we probably never will.

“The inspiration for the name is our son Oliver, although he shouts as us for calling him Ol. It is located on Market Street in Stalybridge and was previously known as Brian Hudson’s Barbers for many, many years.”

As well as taking control of his new venture, Shaun will also be pulling pints at the Bier Hut inside Bower Fold when next season commences.

Shaun has already been in discussions with CEO Wendy Mackie to ensure the service, which received great feedback last season, will be ready to serve the Celtic faithful once again. He said: “The Bier Hut was amazing. We only opened for three games before lockdown but it was massively well received by everyone at the club, and away fans alike.

“I do hope there will be a rise in attendances locally. Although top level football on the tv has been ok in lockdown, there is no beating getting out to a game, having a beer with friends and knowing your money is making a massive influence on a club rather than just being a number.”

Non-league supporters have been deprived of action for a considerable period due to the ongoing nature of Covid-19.

Celtic managed to complete just nine league fixtures last season before a decision was made recently to null and void the campaign.

After a frustrating year for players, fans and officials alike, there is now light at the end of the tunnel with the return of outdoor sports on March 29.

Ideas have been floating around on social media pertaining to a localised competition between Tameside clubs in the near future. The idea is welcomed by Shaun who feels it’s a positive step forward. “A local tournament would be fantastic. Firstly the income raised would be pivotal to aid our great non league clubs. But also having that competitive rivalry amongst Tamesiders would be great to see again. We have so many clubs rich in history and a tournament like this could be a talking point for years.”
