Tintwistle Village Show makes successful return

Many members of the local community gathered at Tintwistle Community Centre on Sexton Street for the return of the ever popular Village Show.

The village burst into life last Saturday (10 September) with the annual one-day show celebrating the work of locals and those from the surrounding areas too.

It featured an exhibition of fruit, flowers, vegetables, cookery, preserves, photography and handicrafts among 72 different categories which were all judged by three professionals on the day. The event later hosted an auction for the public of the exhibited items.

A lovely array of local produce was on display for the day and the event proved to be a wonderful opportunity to see local work showcased, as well as being such an enjoyable day out for the whole family. Tintwistle Brass Band joined the organisers  as live entertainment, and afternoon tea & a refreshment tent was on offer throughout the day.

All funds made on the day went straight back into the association as members are very keen to replace the cabin on their plot of land.

The turnout on the day was incredible and such a success, with a buzzing atmosphere from countless members of the community attending.

Marianne Stevenson, Chair of the Tintwistle Allotment Gardeners Association (TAGA) Show Committee, said: "Many contacted me as soon as they heard of Queen Elizabeth’s death wondering if the show would go ahead. I didn’t hesitate to tell them that it would.

"Our theme was the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and we felt the Show was a tribute to her and her life. We thought she would not want it to be cancelled.

"MP Robert Largan phoned me in the morning to give his apologies. He was going to open the Show but needed to be in the House of Commons for the Queen’s tributes. I opened the Show instead and spoke on Robert’s behalf."

Marianne continued: "We put up the marquees in pouring rain in the early hours but were delighted that by the afternoon the sun was out.

"The teas were a great success. Vicky Mullins did a beautiful job of setting out the refreshment tent.

"There were some stunning exhibits - including a huge marrow, planted wellies, the Queens favourite chocolate cake, beautiful sewn items.

"Our three judges did a really professional job, awarding the prizes and trophies - and providing honest comments on many of the exhibits. There’s always something for exhibitors to learn! Tintwistle Band also provided a great festive atmosphere.

"Chris Bridge did a great job of auctioneering the remaining show exhibits, providing lots of laughs and extraordinary bids for just a bag of apples!

"TAGA was very grateful to all those who bought raffle tickets and sponsored the show, in particular Hadfield Bakery and the Conservative Club and all the individual sponsors of exhibit categories.

"Our new Show team members, learning on the job this year, TAGA hoped enjoyed themselves sufficiently that they will be on board for next year, TAGA’s 10th Annual Show."
