Glossop Music Festival returns on 21 and 22 June

Glossop Music Festival takes place on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 June 2024 with events at Glossop’s Parish Church and St James’ Church.

The Festival brings some of the UK's most sought after musicians to Glossop to perform orchestral and chamber concerts, a choral workshop led by Hallé Choral Directors and engaging family and schools concerts.

Below is a listing of the concerts happening across the weekend - 

Friday 21st June:

19:00 – Parish Church, Old Glossop
Opening Concert: Strauss and Schumann

Award-winning soprano Claire Surman will sing a selection of sublime songs by Richard Strauss arranged for string quartet led by the newly-appointed leader of the Orchestra of Opera North, Katie Stillman. Festival favourite Viv McLean then joins the string quartet to perform Schumann’s stunning Piano Quintet in E flat. The concert concludes with a Johann Strauss II waltz arranged by Berg for piano, harmonium and string quartet.


21:30 – Parish Church, Old Glossop

Late Night Concert: Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring.

Viv McLean and Glossop’s own Benjamin Powell team up to perform Stravinsky’s arrangement of The Rite of Spring for four hands on the piano.

Saturday 22nd June:

11:00-12:00 – St James’ Church, Glossop

Family Concert: Fantastic Fairy Tales.

Carrot Productions brings Goldilocks and The Three Bears and Cinderella to life through music, storytelling, dancing and lots of fun with their family concert, Fantastic Fairy Tales! Led by a professional actor/dancer and musicians from the UK’s leading orchestras, families can enjoy a magical concert and meet the performers afterwards.

14:00-16.00 - St James’ Church, Glossop
Hallé Community Choral Workshop

Hallé Youth and Training Choir Directors Stuart Overington and Matt Roughley lead the annual Hallé Community Choral Workshop. This fun and energetic choral workshop is for everyone! No previous singing experience is necessary as Stuart and Matthew bring their experience as Hallé choral leaders to Glossop. You will leave the workshop feeling uplifted and energised by the power of singing!

19:00 – Parish Church, Old Glossop
Closing Concert: Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony

Glossop Festival Orchestra performs a concert of classical masterpieces directed by violin virtuoso Katie Stillman. With pieces by Fauré, Jessie Montgomery, Mozart and Ravel, the concert concludes with Mendelssohn’s 'Italian' Symphony. Written to capture the sights and sounds of Italy, it is one of the most dramatic pieces of music ever written by the composer.
