High Peak receives £5 million levelling up funding

The Chancellor has just announced that High Peak has been awarded up to £5 million of Levelling Up funding as part of the Spring Budget in order to support local culture projects.

This provisional funding recognises the crucial role that protecting and improving local culture can play in levelling up and supporting communities. This announcement comes after extensive lobbying from Robert Largan, MP for High Peak.

High Peak Borough Council will now be required to bring forward a Levelling Up investment plan in collaboration with Mr Largan, focused on supporting culture in the borough. Mr Largan commented: “I'm really pleased to have secured this major Levelling Up funding for the High Peak.

“I’m proud to go the extra mile to secure government investment in our area. By working together, we’ve already secured £11 million to regenerate Buxton town centre, £7 million to restore Glossop Town Hall & Glossop Market Hall, £145 million to upgrade the Hope Valley railway line, £16 million to restore Toddbrook Reservoir and £228 million to build the Mottram Bypass, to name just a few of investments we’ve won for High Peak.

“I look forward to working with local people and High Peak Borough Council to come up with a Levelling Up investment plan for our area.”

The leader of Derbyshire County Council,Barry Lewis said: "Despite the current financial climate as a Council, we've worked with various groups and organisations to support cultural activities across the High Peak.

"The budget announcement of a provisional allocation to support cultural capital schemes in the High Peak is a welcome one.

"We now await the details from the Government as to when the funding will be available and what the requirements for accessing the funding are, aside from the development and agreement of an investment plan.

"We are aware of several cultural projects in development across the Borough that this funding could help progress. Whilst we await further guidance from the Government, we will be looking to gather these groups together towards the end of the month so that we can develop the required plan to secure the funding."
