High Peak bus service improvement plans

Move More Glossop has been working with Derbyshire County Council on a bus service improvement plan in a bid to improve the services and the knowledge of bus routes for the Glossop and High Peak community.

Move More Glossop has been working with Derbyshire County Council on a bus service improvement plan in a bid to improve the services and the knowledge of bus routes for the Glossop and High Peak community.

Helen Thornhill, a project lead for Move More Glossop - a partnership of community organisations - explained why improvements were necessary to the service.

“The bus service came up as an issue for many of our community, including young people travelling to colleges and for some of our most vulnerable groups in the community,” she said.

“Issues, including lack of standardised service, the expense of bus travel, inadequate destinations, infrequent and irregular service, accessibility issues, the list goes on.”

Aside from the service issues within Glossop and High Peak, there have also been issues with public knowledge of where the buses stop.

Many bus stops around Glossop and the High Peak are just a sign and can be harder to spot than the more usual bus stops.

Move More Glossop have been looking into the issue further, alongside Glossop Active Sustainable Travel and Derbyshire County Council, and have created a map which will help both locals and visitors to the area to navigate the bus routes.

“We have created a user-friendly map with lots of additional useful information for bus users,” Helen said.

“They will be available at key points around town, including the train station, cafés and on notice boards around the town.”

The map has the heading ‘Bus Routes in/out of Glossopdale’, and has multiple bus routes on show, that all lead into Glossop centre.

The map includes a handy key as well, with the bus route drawn in the corresponding key colour to show how many times the bus runs per week.

In the bottom corner a smaller map is shown for people using the 393 and 390 bus service around Glossop, which runs in a circular loop around Tintwistle and back.

People will also see that the 219 from Manchester is on this map, despite running only twice a week to Glossop.

Many people travel to and from Manchester every day, so this service is something that has also been looked into by Helen.

“We are also linking in with TFGM to discuss the service across border into Greater Manchester, which is currently under review as part of the refranchising of their bus services.”

This could mean improvements to the services along this route.

Even with possible changes coming, the map will be helpful for people trying to navigate the complex routes around Glossop and High Peak.
