A local group in Glossop which offers support for people with fibromyalgia is inviting new members to join them.

Fibromyalgia is often considered to be a hidden disability. People who have it are in constant pain and often can’t walk very far.

Sheila Webster was suffering, so 15 years ago she set up the Glossop Fibro Support Group.

The group meets once a month, with members offering help and support to each other.

Members come from all over the High Peak as well as from Tameside.

In October 2021, the group celebrated its 15th birthday with a party in Glossop.

Sheila, 74, from Wood Street, told us: “I was diagnosed with fibro in 1990 and to begin with it didn’t really affect my life that much. But as I’ve got older I am finding more difficult to live my daily life as I am in constant pain. It causes sleep problems, fatigue, and often emotional and mental distress.

"People with fibromyalgia may be more sensitive to pain than people without the condition. For example I can no longer just go for a walk. I now have to use a walker. Many members of the Glossop support group either have to use sticks to walk or some other mobility aid.”

The group has only recently started meeting face to face again. During lockdown, they had to reply on phone calls and text messaging.

The group meets on the second Thursday of each month at The Vineyard, 18-20 Charlestown Road, Glossop, SK13 8JN.
