A rose from a Hadfield garden has been placed on the gates of Buckingham Palace in honour of Queen Elizabeth II.

The flower was plucked from the garden after Lydia Ransome, who was visiting her friend’s mum in Hadfield, spotted the late bloom was the last one on the rose bush as all the others had wilted away.

Lydia was travelling through London on her way to Essex to visit family and friends as her grandad had recently passed away and she wanted to drop by before his funeral on Friday (23 September). 

She said: “We picked the rose and I decided it would make an excellent gift for the Queen as I am passing through London.”

Lydia took the rose down on the train but said by the time she had reached the capital the rose had started to wilt.

She added: “Somebody spotted me in Green Park and gave me a water bottle en route. A police officer also spotted me and offered to take a picture.”

Lydia has now secured the rose on the gates of Buckingham Palace as a special gift for her late Majesty.
