Forest school taster day celebrates new step in long-running battle to save Roughfields

Hadfield children enjoyed a Forest School taster day under the Wishing Tree on Roughfields, following a years-long fight to save the popular green space.

Halina Billingham, the group coordinator, described the event as a 'fantastic turnout'.

"The children had a great time making dens, swinging in hammocks, creating art from pine cones and pieces of wood and having fun in the mud kitchen," she said.

"To round off the adventure, they enjoyed a hot drink and a snack while they listened to a story."

The taster day took place on October 15 between 11am and 1pm, however the group hope to get the funding to set these up as regular sessions in the future.

The session was free of charge as a contribution to the local community and the 'Save Roughfields' group, organisers asked only for £1 per child to cover the cost of a drink and a snack.

Halina added that she'd like to thank the group leader Patsy Leck for organising the session and also HPBC for allowing the event to take place on Roughfields.

Patsy has worked as a qualified Forest School Leader for the past 10 years and is also trained in First Aid.

She said: "Forest School is a child-centred, inspirational learning process that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It develops confidence and self esteem through learner inspired, hands on experiences in a natural setting."
