Chiefs issue warning after garden fires

A warning has been issued by Derbyshire fire chiefs after two serious fires last weekend that both started as small fires in the garden.

The incidents, both in the south of the county, saw homes and property damaged but fortunately no one was injured.

The first, on Saturday (23 April), developed after a brazier was placed too close to a garage that had a wooden door and roof. Windy conditions saw the fire take hold and spread to a neighbouring terrace of properties.

In the second, windy conditions again caused a garden fire to spread this time to a single-storey home.

Fire investigator, Station Manager Barclay Masterson, said: “We would always advise that for any garden fire or barbeque, you have a hose pipe or bucket of water on hand, but reiterate, that if the fire does get out of hand, call 999 immediately.”

“Fire can spread rapidly and dangerously, this is why we issue so many safety warnings and advice for people to ensure garden fires, barbeques, fire pits and braziers are positioned well away from the house, sheds, fences, and overhanging trees and shrubs and cited responsibly.”
