Appeal for new pyjamas to support children in hospital

An appeal is under way in Glossop and Tameside for new sets of pyjamas, which will be given to children in need staying in local hospitals.

Children's Hospital Pyjamas is a UK-based charity, founded in 2009, which collects donations of brand new pyjamas for children aged from newborn to 18-year-olds.

They go to poorly or less fortunate children when they are staying in hospital so they are in more comfortable clothing and don’t have to wear a hospital gown.

Pyjamas for all ages and both genders are needed - including male and female sizes for older children. Due to hygiene reasons, only brand new pyjamas can be accepted.

There are currently 11 drop-off locations across the area (see full list below) where boxes marked with the Children’s Hospital Pyjamas logo will be situated near the entrances to put pyjama donations in.

Handmade hearts will be sown to each pair of pyjamas by the charity before they will then be distributed to Tameside Hospital. Excess items will also be taken to the likes of Manchester Children’s Hospital, Stepping Hill Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, Wythenshawe Hospital and North Manchester Hospital.

The appeal, which started on 1 September, provisionally ends on 30 November.

It’s been organised locally by Jemima Higgins - one of the Manchester area co-ordinators and a teacher at Longdendale High School.

Jemima said: "Children’s Hospital Pyjamas is a national charity which has supported local hospitals, including Tameside Hospital, for a number of years. Children in our area have been gifted pyjamas when they have been most in need and it has helped to put a smile on their face. It also takes pressure off parents to dash home or go out to buy pyjamas at a stressful time.

"Any donations of pyjamas would be really appreciated."

Anyone who wants to support the appeal in any way can either drop off donations at the below locations or email jemima_pyjamas@hotmail.com
