Action-packed Tintwistle Children's Gala proves popular again

Around 400 people enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon at this year's Tintwistle Children's Gala.

The West Drive Football Centre was a hive of activity last Saturday (25 June) with lots of smiling faces from people of all ages.

Organised chiefly nowadays by Tintwistle Athletic, the village's biggest annual event has taken place annually since 1919 – with the exception of 2020 due to coronavirus.

It was another resounding success and the money raised – the final amount is still to be confirmed – will be donated to local organisations in Tintwistle in due course.

Jill Crossland, on behalf of the Children’s Gala Committee, said: “It went really well – it was an absolutely brilliant day and we were lucky with the weather. The Dog Show was great and there were lots of entries. The kids loved the races and the fairground rides.

“For the first time, we had the Lance Corporal Steven Bagshaw Memorial Trophy and the winners of the adult race were Jordan Cranston for the mens and Claire Aitken for the ladies. Start2Jog did a great job of organising all of the Gala races.

“Haywill Animal Rescue brought some animals along and the fire service brought the equipment they use to put out moorland fires to show people which was good. Glossop Mountain Rescue Team also did some demos too.

“Heatherlea Dance Troupe did a display and Arnfield Brass Band also performed which was fantastic. Lots of people stayed for the Paul Blood Memorial penalty shootout at the end which was won by Theo Howden.

“Some of our Under-18s players volunteered to dress up in character mascot outfits which were the Gruffalo, Postman Pat, Peter Rabbit, Mario and Luigi which was great.”

The event wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of so many people.

Jill said: “We’d like to say thank you to Shaun and Jacquie Grace of High Peak Paws for organising and running the ever popular Dog Show. We want to thank the Mayor and Mayoress – they stayed for the whole afternoon and Ollie even took part in the penalty shootout!

“We want to thank Kelly Buxton from Evolution Martial Arts for organising the tug of war and taster kickboxing activity. We also want to thank Start2Jog for organising the races and Arnfield Brass for playing for us, the emergency services for coming, and everyone who attended and supported what was another fantastic event.”

High Peak Mayor, Padfield borough councillor Ollie Cross, and his wife Mayoress Gill Cross were in attendance as well as High Peak MP Robert Largan.

The mayor said: “I want to say a huge thank you to Jill Crossland, the Gala Committee, Tintwistle Athletic, all of the incredible volunteers and local businesses who supported the event for all their hard work and helping to ensure the Gala was a resounding success.

“Also a big shout out to all of the stall holders, ride operators and Councillor Rob Baker for supporting the event with a donation from his Councillor Initiative Fund.”

The Gala Committee is also looking for more volunteers to help ensure the popular event can return next year.

“We were struggling a bit this year because organising the event involves a lot of work,” Jill said. “We would love for more people from the village to come forward and get involved to support the event in terms of helping to put it on to keep it going.”
