No smoking or drinking: 100-year-old Joan's secret to a long life

A centenarian at HC-One’s Stamford Court care home in Stalybridge celebrated her 100th birthday in style this April, and shared her secret to a long life.

Joan Barratt was born on April 10, 1924 at Ashton Infirmary, Tameside Hospital. She worked as a machinist at Cheetham’s Mill in Stalybridge before becoming a midday assistant at Ridge Hill Primary School.

She was a member of the Women's Royal Voluntary Service during the war and was a staunch member of the Stalybridge Baptist Church, where she became a deacon and church treasurer for many years.

Throughout her life, Joan always had an interest in knitting and baking for her family, including her husband Ellis and three sons, Martin, Peter, and John.

She also has six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

When asked about her secret to a long life, Joan said: “I’ve never smoked or drank alcohol. I’ve also enjoyed a lot of homemade cakes and pies, that might be the secret!”

For her 100th birthday celebrations, Joan sported a crown and sparkling birthday sash, her room was decorated beautifully – fit for a queen– and she was showered with cards and presents. Joan’s family visited throughout the day, and it was a great atmosphere.

Sue Jackson, care home manager at Stamford Court, said: “It was an honour to celebrate Joan’s 100th birthday with her.

“Making every birthday special is something we always try and do at Stamford Court, and it is fascinating to hear about everyone’s life stories. I very much enjoy listening to Joan’s stories.

“I will certainly be taking her advice on the secret to a long life!”
