Who's been in court lately?

A man assaulting a police officer and a teenager exposing himself in public are just two of the cases Tameside magistrates have heard recently.

Here's our latest round-up...

Teenager who exposed himself to others

A 19-year-old man from Ashton has been given a suspended detention order by Tameside magistrates.

Hafizullah Nekzad, of Albermarle Terrace, had pleaded not guilty to charges of exposing himself in public in May and August, 2018. He also denied two charges of being threatening and abusive towards two women in Stalybridge back in June 2018.

However, the court found him guilty of all four charges and committed him to six months detention, suspended for 12 months.

Magistrates heard the charges had been a planned series of offences and had caused significant fear and distress.

He must pay £200 court costs and a £115 victim surcharge.

Motorist clocked at 56 in 30mph zone

Greater Manchester Police have conducted a speeding blitz across the region resulting in 40 motorists being reported for offences in just one day.

The worst offender was clocked doing 56mph in a 30mph zone.

Safety checks were also made as part of Project EDWARD (Every Day Without A Road Death) in an effort to improve road safety across Greater Manchester.

Officers seized five vehicles (three for no insurance, one for no licence and one for no MOT) and processed traffic offence reports including:

• 14 for using a mobile phone while driving

• 25 for not wearing a seatbelt

• 10 for issues with their number plate

• five for defective tyres

• nine for illegal window tints

Officers from GMP’s Safer Transport Team were out in force last week with the 40 offences recorded last Wednesday.

Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime, Bev Hughes said: “More than 60 families lost a loved one on our roads alone last year – with a further 600 people suffering serious and often life-changing injuries. That’s more than 600 families affected and their lives changed forever. Collisions are often the result of speeding or being distracted at the wheel.”

Jail threat after being found guilty

Attempting to pervert the course of justice has landed Ashton man Nicholas Martin a suspended prison term.

The 36-year-old, of Palace Road, was charged with intimidating a victim in an investigation. He denied the offence but was found guilty by Tameside Magistrates’ Court and handed an 18 weeks prison sentence, suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to carry out 150 hours unpaid work plus given a restraining order. He must pay compensation of £185.

In a separate hearing he was found guilty of assaulting a woman in Oldham on September 9 last year, plus gaining entry by violence to a property on Birch Lane in Ashton on the same date. He denied the charges but was found guilty on both counts.

For these offences he was ordered to pay a further £100 compensation, £620 court costs and a £122 victim surcharge.
