Who has appeared in court recently?

Tameside Magistrates' Court in Ashton.

A man charged with several sexual offences, cases of drug possession, and an assault on a police officer have been among the recent cases heard at Tameside Magistrates' Court.

Here's our latest round-up...

Driving into double trouble

Ashton driver Adil Sohail appeared before Tameside magistrates charged with driving without due care and attention and while over the drink drive limit.

The 22-year-old, of Cranbourne Close, admitted both offences which had happened on Stockport Road, Ashton, on October 15 last year.

Magistrates heard he was found to have 58 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35.

He was banned from the road for 12 months and fined a total of £200. He must also pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by three months if a driving course is successfully completed.

Police officer was assaulted

Stuart Williamson has been given a 12 months conditional discharge for assaulting a police officer.

The 42-year-old, of Reinslee Road, Ashton, admitted the offence which had happened on May 10 this year.

Tameside magistrates handed him the 12 months conditional discharge, while he also admitted a further charge of failing to surrender to custody and was fined £80.

He must also pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

96mph on M/way

Driving along the M62 at 96mph has cost Droylsden driver Ryan Smith a fine of £230.

The 20-year-old admitted the offence which had happened on July 31 last year on the motorway at Rochdale.

Tameside magistrates also ordered the Greenside Lane resident to pay court costs of £90 and a £34 victim surcharge. His driving licence was endorsed with five penalty points.

£500 for assault

Teenager Kia Neald must carry out 200 hours unpaid work for a charge of assault.

The 19-year-old, of Rothesay Avenue, Dukinfield, initially denied the offence but changed her plea to guilty.

Tameside magistrates heard the offence had happened on June 4 in Hyde last year. They ordered her to pay £500 compensation with associated court costs waved in lieu of the compensation.

Parents face fines

More parents/carers have appeared before Tameside magistrates charged with failing to ensure their children regularly attend school.

Fines of up to £220 were issued, which must also be paid together with associated court costs of more than £150.

Man charged with child sex offences

A 54-year-old man from Stalybridge has been released on bail after being charged with 24 sexual offences.

Marc Harmer, of Ridge Hill Lane, was charged last week with the following offences:

• Possession of an indecent image of a child.

• Attempting to arrange/facilitate a child sexual offence.

• Two counts of sexual communication with a child.

• Sixteen counts of attempted sexual communication with a child.

• Four counts of attempting to arrange/facilitate a commission of a child sexual offence.

He was charged by officers from Tameside Complex Safeguarding Team and has been released on bail, with the condition that he is not to have any contact with anyone under the age of 16.

His first appearance at court is scheduled for Thursday, July 8.

Jail threat for list of crimes

Tameside magistrates have handed Ryan Bardsley an 18 weeks prison sentence, suspended for 24 months.

The 23-year-old, of Field Street, Droylsden, pleaded guilty to a series of charges.

This included stealing clothing valued at £500 from Room 14 in Ashton earlier this month on June 2.

Other theft charges related to taking items from Wilkinsons in Ashton on April 26 and April 27 this year, valued at a total of £200.

He also admitted damaging a display window at the Arcades Shopping Centre in Ashton on April 3 this year, causing £975 of damage.

Magistrates said the reason for custody was the defendant’s history of offending and the offence had happened while he was on bail.

He was given a four weeks curfew, meaning he must remain at his address between the hours of 8pm and 7am each night.

Magistrates ordered him to pay a total of £600 compensation for the thefts.

He must also pay £975 compensation for the damage, with associated court costs waved in lieu of the compensation for the offences.

Driver more than two times over limit

Gary Saunders was more than twice over the drink drive limit when stopped behind the wheel of a car in Ashton, Tameside magistrates heard.

The 59-year-old, of Hope Street, Ashton, pleaded guilty to the offence which had happened on May 17 this year.

The court heard he was found to have 75 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, exceeding the legal limit of 35.

Magistrates banned him from the road for 20 months, although the disqualification can be reduced by five months if a driving course is successfully completed.

He was fined a total of £120, plus ordered to pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £34.

Ban and £246 fine for drink driving

Tameside magistrates have banned Ryan Bland from the road for 12 months for being over the drink drive limit.

The 24-year-old, of Bridgeholme Mills, Chinley, admitted the offence which had happened in Furness Vale on May 13 this year.

The court heard he was found to have 52 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Magistrates fined him £246, plus ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a victim surcharge of £34.

The driving disqualification can be reduced by three months if a driving course is successfully completed.

Suspended sentence for broken orders

Tameside magistrates have handed Mohammed Zaman a suspended jail sentence for breaking court orders.

The 37-year-old, of Alderley Terrace, Dukinfield, admitted breaking the orders, including visiting an address he was prohibited from going to on February 23 this year.

Magistrates handed him a 12 weeks prison term, suspended for two years for his ‘persistent  breach of an order recently imposed.’

He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £128 and a victim surcharge of £85.

Drug driver disqualified from driving for one year

Clayton Barrett, 30, of Richmond Street, Ashton, has been banned from driving for 12 months by Tameside magistrates.

He was found to have exceeded the drug drive limit when stopped on Manchester Road, Ashton, on November 11 last year.

He pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined £80.

He was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Motorist fined £240 for being over drug drive limit

Alex Jones has been banned from the road for 12 months by Tameside magistrates for an offence of drug driving.

The 21-year-old, of Lakeside Avenue, Ashton, admitted the offence which had happened on Newmarket Road, Ashton, on November 20 last year. He was fined £240 and must pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.

Prison term for breaking orders

Breaking court orders has landed George Cooper behind bars for a total of 18 weeks.

Tameside magistrates handed the 27-year-old, of Oak Close, Chapel-en-le-Frith, the prison sentence for having blatantly disregarded previous court orders.

Magistrates heard he had contacted a person while the subject of a restraining order during the operational period of a suspended prison sentence and so had no option but to jail him. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £128.

Offender told to stay away

Michael Marsh was issued with a new restraining order by Tameside magistrates for breaking a previous court order.

Magistrates heard the 36-year-old, of Cheetham Hill Road, Dukinfield, had gone into an address in the town he was prohibited from visiting.

He pleaded guilty to breaching the order and was issued with the restraining order meaning he must have no contact with a named individual and must stay away from the address.

Magistrates fined him £100 plus ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

Man found with cannabis

Tameside magistrates have fined Wayne Howarth £125 for being in possession of a quantity of cannabis and amphetamine.

The 52-year-old, of John Kennedy Road, Hattersley, pleaded guilty to both charges which had happened on January 15 this year.

He was ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £34.

Magistrates ordered the cannabis and amphetamine be forfeited and destroyed.

Drunk, disorderly

Being drunk and disorderly and assaulting a police officer landed Andrew Foster before Tameside magistrates.

The 42-year-old, of Nelson Street, Hyde, pleaded guilty to the offences which had happened in Hyde on April 19 this year.

Magistrates ordered him to carry out 100 hours unpaid work, plus pay £100 compensation, £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.
