Police are investigating after two serious collisions on the same busy road in Droylsden within 24 hours - which have left three men seriously injured.

A 78-year-old man remains in 'a serious condition' in hospital after being transported by air ambulance with a head injury on Friday morning (6 August).

Police were called to Edge Lane at around 9.30am and established on arrival that a car had collided with a pedestrian.

The driver of the car, a 36-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drug driving. Greater Manchester Police say he has since been released under investigation.

Less than 24 hours later, at around 1:30am on Saturday morning (7 August), there was another horror crash on Edge Lane - this time involving a car and a motorbike.

Two young men, aged 22 and 23 respectively, were taken to hospital with serious injuries - one of them is in a 'life-threatening' condition.

GMP say there will be more traffic patrols in the area as investigations into both incidents continue, and the force is appealing for any member of the public who can help to get in touch.

Police Sergeant Andrew Page, of Greater Manchester's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Two very serious incidents have taken place on this road in 24 hours, leaving three men with serious injuries, one of which is life threatening. Our specialist officers are supporting the families of the men affected by these incidents.

"We're now investigating the events that led to these collisions, and the community will see an increased presence in the area. There will be a staffed ANPR car and extra traffic patrols present and monitoring, while our investigations continue.

"If you were present in the area at the times of these collisions, have dash-cam footage, or any other information, please contact police on 0161 856 4741, alternatively you report to us online at www.gmp.police.uk, using our online reporting or Live Chat functions.

"Please do take caution when driving, particularly as we experience changing weather conditions. Further advice on road safety can be found at think.gov.uk."

Reports can also be made anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
