Tameside events to mark International Day of Older Persons

Events including a nostalgic tea dance and enhancing a care home garden have been organised to celebrate Tameside's older people.

The events on Friday 1 October will mark the annual International Day of Older Persons (IDOP).

The theme this year is on climate change, with a focus on the environment, sustainability and plant based foods.

The first event is not a public event and will take place at lunchtime at Millbrook Care Home, where a tree will be planted and bird feeders and boxes placed around the garden to encourage wildlife and for residents to enjoy.

Tameside residents are encouraged to join in an afternoon Tea Dance at 2.30pm to 5pm at the 4C Community Centre in Ashton, hosted by Eclectic Avenue café, who are based in the Taunton Road centre.

There will be classical musical soundtracks, nostalgic tunes and songs from the golden era of Hollywood.

Tickets, which include sandwiches, cakes, tea and coffee, can be purchased at the café from Monday to Friday, 9am-3pm or by contacting Jodylee on 07856703995 or by email Eclectic_avenue@outlook.com at a cost of £10 per person.

There is a wide variety of information on keeping well, physically active, dementia, nutrition and hydration, as well as newsletters for older people on at https://www.tameside.gov.uk/publichealth/olderpeople

Councillor Eleanor Wills, Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Population Health, said: “Tameside Council is committed to being age-friendly and making the borough a great place to grow old. As well as supporting our older people in leading active and healthy lives, we’re proud of the valuable contribution they make.

“We are delighted to support the International Day of Older Persons. The first event will show how we can all connect with and support the environment and be more sustainable, in keeping with this year’s theme, while the tea dance is a great opportunity to get together and enjoy food, music and a dance. I hope there will be lots of people who attend and enjoy such an important day.”
