Tameside celebrates cultural diversity through fashion

People from diverse backgrounds gathered at Dukinfield Town Hall earlier this month to make Tameside’s first cultural fashion show a huge success.

The event, organised by the Civic Mayor, Cllr Tafheen Sharif, not only celebrated diversity and brought together the borough’s communities but also raised more than £800 for her charity appeal fund.

Talking to Tameside Reporter, Cllr Taf Sharif said: “Tameside has diverse and beautiful cultures, and this unique event brought us together and reflected the goodness we all carry and the goodness our cultures carry.

“Dukinfield Town Hall was filled with diversity with people from all backgrounds and colours, something that was amiss when I first joined the Council in 2016, being the only ethnic minority in the room.”

A packed Jubilee Hall saw fashions donated by several retailers while the audience enjoyed various donated dishes reflecting the evening’s multicultural theme.

The hugely successful event showcased solidarity, love and understanding between the people of Tameside and around and raised vital funds for charities.

“Equality and inclusivity are values close to my heart, which motivated me to organise the event. I believe it’s imperative to highlight the positives of each of our communities to create understanding among all.”

“I would like to thank my team of volunteers and retailers, La Fashion, Poppet's Place, Hope Couture and Resham, for helping me organise and deliver the first Cultural fashion show in Tameside,” the Mayor said.

The Civic Mayor’s charity appeal fund comprises Home Start (HOST), which offers expert support to families with young children that are going through difficult times; West African Development, which helps ethnic minority communities in Tameside; and Pauline Town’s We Shall Overcome, which provides assistance for people experiencing homelessness.
