Tameside Arts set to CREATE more

There was a big celebration in Denton last Tuesday as Tameside Arts held a community event to celebrate lots of exciting news.

The organisation has received six-figure funding from the National Lottery ‘Reaching Communities’ fund to improve their new home, the CREATE Centre on Market Street, and develop arts and events across Tameside and Manchester.

Coronation Street actress Sue Devaney and musician Phil Reynolds were the special guests, with both performing and hosting workshops throughout the day.

With Sue and Phil’s help, two new choirs were launched at the event, with both well-attended and enjoyed. The Create Harmony choir meets at the centre every Tuesday from 12pm-1pm. The Connect choir is for members of the public who would benefit from a more supportive environment and meets every Tuesday from 1pm-2pm, also at the centre.

“This event was fabulous!” said Sam Cooke, Project Manager at Tameside Arts. To welcome Sue Devaney and Phil Reynolds, and enjoy their entertainment, was a pleasure. To watch Sue sing her own rendition of Victoria Wood’s ‘The Balled of Barry and Freda (Let’s Do It)’ was the highlight.

“Thanks to Councillors Brenda Warrington and Denise Ward for opening the event and to Laurel and Hardy – Sailors Beware Tent 262 Hyde for making us laugh!

“Ultimately, the event announced that we have been successful in receiving three-year funding of £179,822 for a Centre Manager and Promotional Co-ordinator, as well as installing a lighting rig and stage curtains in our adaptable theatre and dance space.”

The event also gave Tameside Arts the opportunity to share their new project, the Arts Engagement programme, where they’ll be linking people interested in the arts with theatres, museums and art galleries to gain skills and share learning.

Now, Tameside Arts want local residents to share ideas on how they would like to use the CREATE Centre and what events they would like to see.

Sam added: “We welcome anyone to call in, phone or e-mail us to share ideas of how the centre can be used. We really want it to be used by the community! This includes both mainstream and specialist activities and events.

“2019 was a fantastic year for Tameside Arts as we found and moved into our base. 2020 will be even better as we work towards each room being used daily, evenings and weekends – encouraging and supporting everyone to take part in, and enjoy, the arts.”
