Successful return for 'Big Party in the Park' in Stalybridge

There was fun for all of the family as Cheetham Park in Stalybridge was a hive of activity once again for the 'Big Party in the Park'.

There was a great turnout on Sunday (22 August) for the event, which was staged by Stalybridge Festival Committee to make up for the disappointment of having to cancel the Stalybridge Carnival for the last two years due to Covid-19.

There was lots to keep people entertained including a Fun Dog Show, live music, a fun fair, hot food stalls, as well as a number of trader and community stalls.

At 1pm, there were two minutes of applause in tribute to the NHS and other key workers who have served the community throughout the pandemic - which was led by the Civic Mayor of Tameside Councillor Janet Cooper.

During the extravaganza, the mayor and Stalybridge MP Jonathan Reynolds even tried their hand at Maypoling!

Further entertainment was provided on the day by the Bee-Amazed Musical Theatre Group.

Based in Stalybridge and Dukinfield, more than 40 members attended on the day to provide a series of lively dance routines. The group caters for all ages from three-years-old and over, although most members are school age.

The group will be busy with rehearsals next month as they prepare for a show at Hyde Festival Theatre in October. Full details can be found on the group's Facebook page.

Ian Cochrane, organising secretary of Stalybridge Festival Committee, said: “It was a brilliant day in Cheetham Park for our Stalybridge Big Party event to make up for the disappointment of cancelling the carnival these last two years and so nice to see so many families having a good time.

“We look forward to seeing you all in the park next May for our Stalybridge Spring Show and at the end of June for the return of the carnival.”

MP Reynolds said on his Facebook page: "Smashing day at the Party in the Park. Well done to Stalybridge Carnival Committee for organising it. There was a lovely tribute to the NHS; I tried Maypoling with the Mayor; and my kids were thrilled to help judge the dog show - congratulations to all the waggy winners, especially ultimate champion Al! Wonderful to see so many of you in person. And the rain held off!"
