Staying safe during Halloween and Bonfire Night

People across Tameside are being encouraged to have a safe and enjoyable Halloween and Bonfire Night by following some simple steps.

The 2019 Treacle campaign - organised by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) in partnership with Tameside Council and other local authorities, Greater Manchester Police (GMP), Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) – encourages people to go to organised events where possible to help avoid risks associated with bonfires and fireworks.

Anyone who does decide to have a firework display at home is urged to follow the fireworks code which can be found at https://www.manchesterfire.gov.uk/staying-safe/what-we-do/seasonal-safety/firework-safety-advice/. 

Parents and carers are urged to check their children’s Halloween costumes carry the CE safety standards mark, and are reminded to keep them away from naked flames such as candles.

Anyone whose children are going out over the Halloween and bonfire period is advised to ensure they know where their children are and how to contact them.

People are reminded that it's illegal for under 18s to buy or use fireworks. Anyone wishing to report firework nuisance or other anti-social behaviour can call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111. If there is a risk to life or property, call 999.

Cllr Allison Gwynne, Tameside Council Executive Member responsible for community safety, said: "This is an exciting time of year, with Halloween and Bonfire Night presenting many opportunities for families and communities to get together and have fun.

"While we want people to enjoy themselves, we also want them to stay safe and just take some simple steps to help protect themselves and their families from any harm.

"The key advice is to go to organised events where you can – there are normally lots of local community events advertised in the local press and on social media that are a safer way to enjoy fireworks without the risks of holding your own display at home. Also keep tabs on where your children are and keep in close touch with them."
