Rotary president's big walking challenge

Ian Cochrane.

To raise money for the Dukinfield and Stalybridge Rotary Club, their newly-elected president Ian Cochrane is taking on a 'mad challenge'.

Back-to-back, Ian will complete the Welsh 3000 Challenge, the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge and the National 3 Peaks Challenge.

He’ll start his journey on Monday 9 August and though he’s done sections of each trek before, he’s never completed them all together.

The challenges are as follows:

  • Welsh 3000 Challenge – 15 peaks all over 3,000 feet, totalling 30 miles in under 24 hours

  • Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge – 24.5 miles over 5,500 feet completed under 12 hours

  • National 3 Peaks Challenge – climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon in less than 24 hours

Ian added: “I’ve always wanted to complete all 3 challenges at the same time as part of my bucket list. It’s going to be very demanding, and my colleagues refer to it as my ‘mad challenge’ because it’s a challenge which should only be undertaken by someone extremely fit.

“The money raised will be used to support good causes in our local community and beyond.”

Training for the big event has seen Ian do some tough gym sessions and practice on hills such as Kinder Scout and Hartshead Pike.
