Regional Covid rate falls for fourth week despite rise in cases in half of boroughs

Greater Manchester's overall Covid-19 infection rate has fallen for the fourth week in a row, despite cases rising in half of the region's boroughs.

The case rate has halved within almost a month, with 304.6 cases per 100,000 people in the week to August 6 compared to 633.5 in the week ending July 16.

But the most recent figure remains slightly higher than the national average of 296.2 cases per 100,000, while the speed at which infections were falling has also slowed down.

Meanwhile the number of Covid cases have risen marginally across Bury, Oldham, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford.

The number of cases amongst people in Greater Manchester over the age of 60 has also risen in all but four boroughs – Bolton, Stockport, Tameside and Trafford.

In Rochdale the infection rate among over-60s has more than doubled from 95.1 per 100,000 in the week ending July 29 to 184.2 recorded in the week to August 5.

However the highest rates of infection are still being found amongst people in the 16-29 age group across all districts.

A total of 161 people were admitted to hospital with Covid-19 in the week to August 9, less than the 180 reported in the week to July 26.

The number of people diagnosed with the virus while in hospital has also fallen from 212 to 165 over the same time period.

There were 68 people in intensive care in hospitals across Greater Manchester, with 319 patients occupying non-emergency beds.

The percentage of care home residents with Covid-19 or showing symptoms of the virus has also risen slightly from 0.4 per cent to 0.5 per cent.

Almost everyone over the age of 70 has received at least both doses of a Covid vaccine, while three quarters of people aged between 50 to 69 have also had theirs.

Just over two thirds of people aged 18 to 49 have had at least one jab, but less than half have had their second.

In total 1.87 million people have had their first jab, with a further 1.58 million receiving their second.
