Primary Schools battle it out to become best in the borough

Primary School pupils have been battling it out to become the kings and queens of Tameside in a number of different sports.

The Lancashire Cricket preliminary rounds have been taking place at Dukinfield Cricket Club, while the highly anticipated Netball Final was held at Copley Leisure Centre.

Organised by Tameside School Sports Partnership, both events were well contested and served to highlight the growing standard of competition amongst pupils in the borough.

Following a tightly contested final, St Mary’s, Denton, were crowned netball champions, while Downson Primary School, Hyde, trailed closely in second.

Both schools will go on to represent the borough at the Greater Manchester Summer School Games in June.

Meanwhile, Greswell Primary School won the Girls’ Cricket Final after winning every game on the afternoon. They will represent the borough at the Lancashire Finals in the coming months. Greenside Primary School, Droylsden, came second, while Oasis Academy Broadoak, Ashton, finished third.

It’s been a fantastic month for Greswell, who also impressed on the football pitch and lifted the Heywood Cup for the very first time.

Speaking to Reporter Sport about the achievement, teacher Matt Donohue said: “It was a fantastic football match for the school. We were in the Heywood Cup Final and the school won it for the very first time.

“It was a really interesting game and we played against a strong Manor Green, who had already beaten us 4-0 in a different cup earlier in the season.

“We were 2-0 up in the match, but Manor Green managed to pull it back to 2-2, and in the last minute Noah scored to give us a 3-2 victory.

“All the boys that were involved are absolutely buzzing. Joe Bevan, who's our coach, and Chris McCue, who’s managing the team this year are absolutely buzzing. It was a great occasion.”
