Police respond to residents' concerns in Hyde

Anti-social behaviour on a golf course, a hotspot for 'racing' drivers and a spate of crimes in one area were among the issues raised by Hyde residents in the latest Q&A chat with police.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police’s Hyde, Newton, Hattersley and Longdendale neighbourhood teams answered questions in the online forum on Monday (19 October).

Youths causing trouble on golf course

A member of Dukinfield Golf Club, which borders Newton, said the club faces “a constant battle” with groups of youths damaging and vandalising the course and gathering around the 18th tee.

He said the area is used for consumption of alcohol and the taking of nitrous oxide, adding that the club “need support, especially in school holidays”.

In response, the Newton policing team said they have previously worked with the golf course “in an attempt to identify the youths responsible for anti-social behaviour and criminal offences” and regularly patrolled the course “where resources and commitments allowed”.

They also said that until the weekend of 17-18 October they weren’t aware of any recent anti-social behaviour incidents on the golf course or reports to them.

The golf course has been identified by police as a ‘hotspot’ area where there’s an anticipated increase of anti-social behaviour across Tameside with Halloween and Bonfire Night looming, with additional police resources set to be on duty as a result.

The team added that in the long term, officers plan to work with the golf course and its members “to identify and deal with those responsible and to try to prevent further incidents”.

'Racing' on Talbot Road

One resident asked what plans police had to tackle ‘speeding’ and ‘racing’ on Talbot Road in Newton which they said “appears to be getting worse”. Another said that it's been "horrendous", claiming there has been one death and a hit-and-run outside their block of houses.

Police responded by saying that officers from Hyde Police Station are planning on conducting a speed enforcement operation in the Hyde and Hattersley areas “in the near future” – with Talbot Road one of the locations identified as a hotspot for vehicles driving in excess of the speed limit.

In addition, in the long term, they added that the Newton policing team will be contacting Tameside Council “with a view to establishing the criteria and feasibility of having traffic calming measures put in place along that stretch of road and/or the installation of a permanent speed camera”.

Matley Lane area 'a hotspot for crime'

Another resident asked if there are any plans for a Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) to offer a visible presence around the Matley Lane area (pictured), particularly Townley Fold, as it “seems to be a hotspot for crime at the minute”.

In response, police said the Newton neighbourhood team were aware of recent burglaries on and around the area and officers have been patrolling it recently, as well as over the summer after reports of anti-social behaviour on a play park.

They added: “PCSOs do patrol this area and recently did house-to-house enquiries in connection with a report of a burglary.

“On that visit, neighbourhood watch literature was passed onto a resident who was keen to set an official scheme up. If this is something you still feel hasn’t been completed or started, please email 62771@gmp.police.uk to start.

“The Newton PCSO did engage with residents during this visit and passed on burglary reassurance and advice.

“There were also reports in the height of the summer period about anti-social behaviour on the children’s park, next to Townley Fold. This was heavily patrolled and during our Operation Sycamore, weapon sweeps and evening patrols were also completed during this time.”

Police said they will also look into speeding on Matley Lane, which one resident said is "a big problem at all times of the day with the majority of drivers ignoring the 30 miles per hour restriction".
