Nostalgia: Birthday girl's childhood sweetheart makes public proposal

TAN-JOY: Julie can hardly believe her ears as John's proposal is heard over the store's public address system.

Back in 1991, birthday girl Julie Entwistle was lost for words when her childhood sweetheart proposed to her - over the tannoy at work.

Julie, 23, of Stalybridge, who worked on the pizza counter at Asda in Ashton was amazed to hear boyfriend John Shelton’s very public declaration of his love.

The blushing bride-to-be had no hesitation in replying “Yes!”

John, 22, from Mossley, bought the engagement ring as a birthday present.

“I wanted to make her day unforgettable,” he said.

More than 30 friends of the couple had gathered to hear the big announcement.

After singing happy birthday over the tannoy, John ran over and on bended knee asked Julie to marry him, earning a round of applause from shop staff and customers.
