Mossley group's plea to learn simple skills which can save a life

Mossley Defib group is urging people to learn CPR following the recent collapse of Danish footballer Christian Eriksen.

The 29-year-old Inter Milan player had emergency medical treatment on the pitch during the Euro 2020 match between Denmark and Finland on Saturday.

His condition is now stable and he has now been discharged from hospital following a successful operation to fit a defibrillator implant.

Mossley Defib group says it is vital people learn the skills to help keep someone alive before the emergency services arrive.

They said: “Christian Eriksen’s collapse was reminiscent of Fabrice Muamba’s cardiac arrest, mid-match and on TV.

“A reminder that a cardiac arrest can happen to anyone regardless of their fitness level (not just to older, overweight smokers).

“And if it happens they need their friends, family and bystanders to keep their blood circulating - without that they will, almost certainly, die before the ambulance arrives,” they added.

“Heart compressions are vital and can be done even in these Covid times when mouth-to-mouth isn’t appropriate.

“If anyone would like to learn CPR and practice using a defibrillator (or refresh their past training) please get in touch - it’s part of what we do as Community First Responders for the North West Ambulance Service.”

Most schools in Mossley have a defibrillator installed; as well as most doctors and dentists.

There is one in the George Lawton Hall and it is available to use when the building is open.

There are also two public access defibs - one at the fire station and one at the railway station.

If you require the use of a defib, call 999 and the ambulance service will tell you where the closest one is located.

They will also give you the access code to use the defibrillator.

North West Ambulance Service has released a simple, quick step poster which shows you what to do when someone has a cardiac arrest. Visit https://bit.ly/3gA9Gi7
