Floral tributes and touching messages have been left close to the scene of a hit-and-run in which a 56-year-old man sadly died in the Hurst area of Ashton last weekend.

A number of bouquets of flowers as well as messages paying tribute to 'Dave' have been displayed close to the Royal Oak pub on Lees Road.

Emergency services rushed to the junction of Hurst Cross and Kings Road at around 11.45pm on Saturday evening (19 June).

Police say enquiries established that a white Mercedes Sprinter van had been travelling along Lees Road, before continuing onto Hurst Cross.

The van was then involved in a collision with a pedestrian, who had been crossing the road.

Greater Manchester Police say that the van failed to stop at the scene and was later found abandoned on Park Road in Stalybridge.

The pedestrian - a 56-year-old man - was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed but the man hasn't yet been formally identified.

In a short statement issued by GMP, a member of the man's family said: "The whole family are devastated at our loss. This is a difficult time at the moment and the family would like privacy at this time to process the news."

A 29-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody for questioning.

Police say enquiries are ongoing.

Sergeant Matt Waggett, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "Tragically, a man has lost his life as a result of this collision and our thoughts are very much with his family and loved ones as they begin to process this horrendous news. They are currently receiving support from specialist officers.

"We currently have one man in custody in connection with this collision but we're appealing to anyone with information to come forward and speak with us to assist our investigation. The van involved in the collision failed to remain at the scene so we're particularly keen to speak with anyone who witnessed a white Mercedes Sprinter in the area at the time."
