A man has died after a serious collision between a lorry and a pedestrian in Ashton.

Emergency services rushed to Manchester Road just before 2pm on Thursday afternoon (14 October) to a report of a collision involving a lorry and a pedestrian.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, a 72-year-old man - who was the pedestrian - was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the driver of the lorry remained at the scene to assist with their enquiries.

Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made, GMP have also said.

PS Phil Shaw, from GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This is a tragic incident in which a man has sadly died. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends at this time.

"This collision happened in the middle of the day and I am hopeful that there are a number of witnesses who can assist us with our enquiries.

"If you were in the area at the time and witnessed this collision or have any dashcam footage, please do not hesitate to contact police."

A number of road closures were in place from around 2pm to approximately 7.30pm, which caused significant congestion across Tameside, whilst investigation work was carried out.
