Emaciated dog found tied to a railway bridge

The RSPCA has launched an investigation after an emaciated and terrified dog was found tied to a railway bridge and later died.

The nine-year-old crossbreed dog was discovered by a man who was walking near a bridge off Buckley Road in the Gorton area, just outside Tameside, near to a path which runs towards Brookhurst Road, at around 11am on Wednesday 9 December.

He said he saw another male leaning over the dog, who had a bath mat draped around her, and told him he was trying to release her as she was tethered.

The man helped him and managed to free her. He then took her home before reporting the matter to the RSPCA. Sadly the dog was so poorly she died in the care of the good Samaritan hours later.

RSPCA Inspector Natalie Avery is now investigating and is appealing for information to trace the person responsible for dumping the neglected pet.

She said: “It appears someone has decided to get rid of their dog in such a callous way by leaving her tied up in this wooded area.

“She was clearly in a neglected state as she was obviously underweight with her ribs seen protruding.

“When she was found she had a bath mat (pictured below) attached round her shoulders as though the person who left her wanted to keep her warm. But this was soaking wet because of the weather and she was left terrified.

“A good Samaritan managed to free her but sadly she died hours later in their care.”

Natalie is keen to trace the person who dumped the dog and believes someone may recognise her and the distinctive collar she was wearing and also the bath mat left tied to her.

Anyone with information should call the RSPCA appeals line on 0300 123 8018.
