Creative scarecrows on show in Dane Bank

Dozens of scarecrows have been making an appearance around the Dane Bank area of Denton in these past few weeks.

Residents have been busy getting involved with the very first Dane Bank Scarecrow Festival and showing off their creations in their gardens, around their homes and also outside community buildings.

The idea for the festival was thought up by Hannah Thornton, initially to give everyone something to do.

“I was really bored in the lockdown and remembered seeing a festival before for scarecrows and thought it would be a good idea,” said Hannah.

“Dane Bank has a really good community spirit and when I posted the idea on the community Facebook page it got really good support - so everyone has been involved since then.”

As a result Hannah created a dedicated Dane Bank Scarecrow Festival Facebook page with more than 45 entries having been received.

Initially the festival was ‘just for fun’ but it soon became a money-raising opportunity for the community-run Denton West End Community Library.

“The library is really close to our hearts so it was an opportunity to raise money as it is such a tough time for libraries right now,” added Hannah.

The community has been voting for its favourite scarecrow with prizes up for grabs for the best three. The results will be announced on Saturday.

It is hoped the festival will now become an annual event.

There is still time to make a voluntary donation to help the library at www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/DaneBankScarecrowFestival
