Council obtain court order to move on travellers in Ashton

Tameside Council has obtained a court order to move on a group of travellers who have set up camp in Ashton.

The motorhomes first appeared last Wednesday (23 June) and the council moved swiftly to begin legal proceedings for their removal.

Writing on Facebook, Waterloo Councillor Vimal Choksi MBE said that the council approached the travellers on Monday morning (28 June) to discover if they are complying with the direction to leave notice.

Cllr Choksi says that this has been refused by the travellers, meaning that the council has proceeded with obtaining a court order which will be issued to them soon, accompanied by the police.

If the travellers are non-compliant with the court order, police action is expected to ensure that the breach of the order is follow up appropriately.

Cllr Choksi said: “I am hearing from the residents that, they may leave lot of debris, which we will have to deal after they leave.

“TMBC has assured me that all necessary clean up operation will be done by TMBC to bring it to its original state.

“I am sure, it is distressing to many residents, who are being caught up in this situation but be assured that TMBC and Police are working on this matter as per the protocols.”
