Car Cavalcade travels through Tameside in support of Cuba

A protest through Tameside is part of an international campaign to show solidarity with Cuba.

Car Cavalcade’s are taking place globally on June 19, but other demonstrations continue until June 23. The date is significant as it is when Cuba plans to present a resolution at the UN to end the US blockade on their country.

The local Cavalcade begins at 12pm in Hyde Morrison’s car park on Mottram Road, before going through the centre of Ashton and back to The Sportsman in Hyde.

All supporters are invited to follow the procession or stand outside and show their solidarity in other ways. This could mean making a sign or banner, putting up posters or decorating the outside of your house.

Organisers of the event are Cubans in the UK and the Cuba Solidarity Campaign, but the idea of car and bicycle cavalcades started in Miami in 2020.

They were led by Cuban Americans calling for the US administration to allow families to be reunited by ending travel restrictions, opening the US embassy in Havana for visa processing and making it possible for them to send money home to their families in Cuba.

Though these problems could easily be dismissed as American, families all over the world, including the UK, are effected by these challenges.
